Our Foundation
The GREAT Trust
The Gulf Regional Economic Aboriginal Trust (GREAT) is dedicated to empowering the Indigenous communities of the Lower Gulf of Carpentaria through sustainable economic growth.
Our Purpose
Empowering The
Lower Gulf
The Gulf Regional Economic Aboriginal Trust (GREAT) was established to support the economic and social advancement of First Nations peoples in the Lower Gulf of Carpentaria. GREAT was formed to transition the assets of the Aboriginal Development Benefits Trust (ADBT) to a structure aligning with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
Our charitable purpose remains true to the original vision of ADBT established in 1998. We proudly serve the Native Title Groups including the Waanyi, Mingginda, Gkuthaarn and Kukatj peoples, as well as Aboriginal people residing in Burke (Burketown), Carpentaria (Normanton), Doomadgee, and Mornington Island.
Our Initiative
A Social Enterprise
As a social enterprise, GREAT has emerged as one of the most effective economic development organisations in the country. Our long-term sustainability is driven by owning and operating a diverse portfolio of successful businesses, spanning retail, tourism, and essential community services.
Profits from our business activities are instrumental in supporting and growing economic development opportunities for Gulf Communities. This proactive approach ensures ongoing development and actively empowers the Gulf, fostering economic stability while promoting Indigenous ownership and entrepreneurship.
