Lower Gulf Communities

The heart of Ancient Journeys lies in communities along the Lower Gulf of Carpentaria. The gallery supports both emerging and established Aboriginal artists from this region, showcasing the richness of their creativity — from paintings and ceramics to carvings, textiles and traditional artefacts. All original wall paintings are sourced exclusively from the Lower Gulf. Every Gulf painting is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity detailing the artist and their story.

Doomadgee

Doomadgee, home to the Waanyi and Gangalidda peoples, nurtures a range of artistic talent. Independent artist Kelly Barclay, known for her vibrant interpretations of local culture and landscapes, is featured alongside works by other local artists. Ancient Journeys has collaborated with Kelly on limited edition prints and hosted a solo exhibition.

Mornington Island

Mornington Island

Mornington Island’s MI Arts is a hub for the vibrant paintings of the Lardil, Kaiadilt, and Yangkaal peoples, inspired by the island’s land, sea, and reefs. Celebrated Kaiadilt artist Sally Gabori brought international attention to the island’s art, and her daughters and nieces continue her painting legacy alongside traditional carvings and artefacts by independent artists.
