Handmade Shell & Seed Necklace with Burnie Beans by Betty Mirnyowan – Anindilyakwa Arts
$160.00
This handmade shell necklace by Betty Mirnyowan of Anindilyakwa Arts is a beautiful example of traditional shell‑and‑seed jewellery from Groote Eylandt. Clusters of tiny natural‑coloured shells are threaded onto strong nylon, interspersed with very dark brown burnie beans for contrast. The necklace measures 85 cm in total length, with a 42cm drop, and fastens with a silver‑coloured toggle clasp.
At the base, the combination of shells and burnie beans gives the piece a rich, earthy texture — a wearable expression of coastal materials and Indigenous craftsmanship. Each necklace is one‑of‑a‑kind, handcrafted with care by a woman artist from Anindilyakwa Arts.

Burnie bean” (sometimes spelled “burny bean/bean seed/sea bean”) refers to drift seeds — often from tropical vines — that wash up on beaches. They’re used in many Aboriginal and coastal‑style jewellery pieces as beads/pendants.
