Artwork Story
This is my representation of the cycle of life, painted on canvas through the sea turtle and her eggs.
The sea turtle is a source of food throughout the coastal communities of northern Australia. The eggs are gathered from beneath the sand—take enough to feed family, leave the rest to hatch.
The sea turtle is in the centre. The eggs are the dotted white circles. The background is dotted in red and yellow ochre, which represents the soil colour on Country.

Note: Wesley Williams is not a Gulf artist, but his artwork is part of the Wes Williams Collection at Ancient Journeys. These paintings showcase his country, Cherbourg, Queensland.

I was born on Wakka Wakka Country in Cherbourg, Queensland. I carried the inspiration to paint culture as a young boy, watching the old man paint artefacts-boomerangs, spears, and shields. I started painting in my early 50s in the Aboriginal style. This is my way of holding onto my culture through sorrow, hard separation, isolation, and incarceration. It brings peace to my mind, heart, and soul. When I am painting, it takes me out of the dark places and travels my mind back to my home, my love for my family, my children, and my community. It takes away the anger and brings me comfort, strength, resilience, and peace.
