Three Dresses by Wanda Gibson

$26.95

Wanda Gibson shares a touching story from her childhood on Hope Vale Mission in Far North Queensland, where her mother’s simple advice—“Take three dresses: one to wash, one to wear, and one spare”—held deep meaning. Each year, her family would travel for two days to a quiet beach, where they camped, cooked fish on the fire, and enjoyed time together.

Told in Wanda’s own voice and illustrated with her vibrant paintings, Three Dresses is a heartfelt celebration of family, Country, and the beauty in everyday moments.

About the Author and Artist

Wanda Gibson is a Nukgal Wurra woman of the Guugu Yimithirr people on her mother’s side, and a Yuuethawarra woman through her father, whose Country is around Cape Melville. She lives in Hope Vale, a small Aboriginal community on the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland. Both of Wanda’s parents were part of the Stolen Generations and were brought to the Cape Bedford Mission as children.

A skilled artist and master weaver, Wanda creates baskets, birds, and fish using dried grasses, and she also paints. In 2014, she completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at Cairns TAFE. Wanda is a proud mother of five, grandmother of eleven, and great-grandmother of five.
